Sometimes less is more, and that is the case with the new wireless alarm systems. In the past, many alarm systems cost thousands of dollars and required a several day installation with technicians on the premise drilling holes and fishing wires though walls and over ceilings. Then, when the system was finally installed, the owner had to be trained how to operate the system, which was usually complicated and difficult to use. As a result, the alarms were usually left turned off most of the time.
For years, the only affordable signaling method that allowed these systems to commuicate to a 24 hour central station was a device called a digital dialer. These dialers were actually primitive computer dial-up modems that used the existing phone line on the premise to send alarm data to the monitoring facility. Dialers were very reliable and would work very well when they were tested by the owner. However burglars eventually learned that if they cut the phone lines outside of the premise, no alarm signal would be transmitted to the central station.
Today, the technology of burglar alarm systems has totally changed. One of the industry leaders who is offering these new types of systems is Guardcom, that sells wireless cellular security alarm systems that require no installation.
The Guardcom systems are extremely easy to use. A keychain keypod is provided to arm and disarm the system just like a car alarm. If a burglar enters the premise when the alarm is activated, the system will send an instant signal to the 24 hour central station via a radio transmitter that uses cellular telephone radio frequencies. Because this is a cellular system, a burglar who cuts the telephone line will have no effect on this system's ability to notify the central station. Other wireless devices such as smoke detectors, panic buttons, and door sensors can be added. A premise must be located in an area that has cellular phone coverage for this system to work.
